Ingredients
– 1 (4-6 pound) boneless ham, preferably smoked or cured
– 1/4 cup barbecue sauce
– 1/4 cup beer (optional)
– 2 tablespoons brown sugar
– 1 teaspoon ground mustard
– 1 teaspoon ground cloves
– 4 hamburger buns or soft buns
– Coleslaw (optional)
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C).
2. In a small bowl, mix together barbecue sauce, beer (if using), brown sugar, mustard, and cloves.
3. Place the ham in a large Dutch oven or oven-safe pot. Pour the sauce mixture over the ham.
4. Cover the pot with a lid and transfer it to the preheated oven.
5. Braise the ham for 2-3 hours, or until it’s tender and easily shreds with a fork.
6. Remove the pot from the oven and let the ham cool slightly.
7. Using two forks, pull the ham apart into shreds.
8. Split the hamburger buns in half and toast them lightly.
9. Spoon the pulled ham onto the buns.
10. Top with coleslaw (if using) and serve immediately.
Tips
– Use a smoked or cured ham for the best flavor.
– If you prefer a spicier ham, add some diced jalapeños or red pepper flakes to the sauce mixture.
– Consider serving the pulled ham sandwiches with additional toppings, such as diced onions, pickles, or barbecue sauce.
