Sweet and Tangy Homemade Sloppy Joes

Posted on December 29, 2024 by admin

Ingredients

For the Filling:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (or ground turkey for a leaner option)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small green bell pepper, finely chopped (optional)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

For the Sauce:

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp chili powder (optional, for a little heat)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

For Serving:

  • 4–6 hamburger buns or sandwich rolls
  • Sliced pickles (optional, for garnish)
  • Coleslaw (optional, for topping)

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Beef Mixture

  1. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned (about 5–7 minutes).
  2. Drain excess fat, leaving about 1 tablespoon in the skillet.
  3. Add the onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Cook until softened, about 3–4 minutes.

Step 2: Make the Sauce

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Pour the sauce over the beef mixture in the skillet. Stir to coat everything evenly.

Step 3: Simmer

  1. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.

Step 4: Assemble the Sloppy Joes

  1. Toast the hamburger buns if desired.
  2. Spoon the beef mixture onto the bottom half of each bun.
  3. Top with sliced pickles or coleslaw for extra crunch and flavor, then add the top half of the bun.

Tips for Success

  • Make It Ahead: The filling can be prepared a day ahead and reheated for even better flavor.
  • Customize It: Add diced jalapeños for heat or swap ketchup with BBQ sauce for a smoky twist.
  • Bun Choices: Use brioche, pretzel rolls, or even slider buns for variety.
