Ingredients:
– 1 1/2 cups warm water
– 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
– 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
– 1/2 cup grated mozzarella cheese (or other melting cheese)
– 3 cloves garlic, minced
– 1 tablespoon butter, melted
– Chopped cilantro or scallions for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
1. Activate the yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water and yeast. Let it sit for 5-7 minutes, until the yeast becomes frothy.
2. Mix the dough: Add the flour, salt, and vegetable oil to the bowl. Mix until a soft dough forms.
3. Knead the dough: Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.
4. Let it rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, until it has doubled in size.
5. Prepare the garlic butter: Mix the minced garlic with the melted butter.
6. Shape the naan: Divide the dough into 6-8 equal portions. Roll out each portion into a ball and then flatten it slightly into an oval shape.
7. Top with cheese and garlic butter: Place a tablespoon or two of grated cheese in the center of each naan. Drizzle with garlic butter.
8. Bake the naan: Preheat a non-stick skillet or tava over medium heat. Place a naan in the skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes, until it starts to puff up. Flip the naan and cook for another minute, until it’s golden brown.
9. Serve: Brush the naan with melted butter and garnish with chopped cilantro or scallions, if desired. Serve hot and enjoy!
Tips:
– Use a pizza stone in the oven to get a crispy crust.
– Brush the naan with garlic butter before baking for an extra boost of flavor.
– Experiment with different types of cheese, such as cheddar, parmesan, or feta.
– Serve with your favorite Indian dishes, such as chicken tikka masala or palak paneer.
