Ingredients:
– 1 pound (450g) thinly sliced lamb or chicken breast
– 1/4 cup (60g) olive oil
– 2 cloves garlic, minced
– 1 tablespoon (15g) lemon juice
– 1 teaspoon paprika
– 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
– 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
– Salt and black pepper to taste
– 4-6 pita breads
– Tzatziki sauce (store-bought or homemade)
– Chopped parsley, tomatoes, onions, and pickles for garnish
Instructions:
1. Marinate the meat: In a large bowl, whisk together olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, paprika, cumin, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and black pepper. Add the sliced lamb or chicken and mix well. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
2. Grill the meat: Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. Remove the meat from the marinade, letting any excess liquid drip off. Grill the meat for 3-4 minutes per side, or until cooked through.
3. Warm the pita breads: Wrap the pita breads in foil and warm them in the oven at 350°F (180°C) for 5-7 minutes.
4. Assemble the shawarma: Slice the grilled meat into thin strips. Place a few strips onto each warmed pita bread, followed by a dollop of tzatziki sauce, some chopped parsley, tomatoes, onions, and pickles.
5. Serve and enjoy: Serve the shawarma immediately and enjoy!
