Here’s a recipe for the Best Blooming Onion:

Ingredients:

– 1 large sweet onion (such as Vidalia or Texas Sweet)
– 1 cup all-purpose flour
– 1 teaspoon paprika
– 1 teaspoon garlic powder
– 1 teaspoon onion powder
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
– 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
– 1 cup buttermilk
– Vegetable oil for frying
– Blooming Onion Sauce (see below)

Blooming Onion Sauce:

– 1 cup mayonnaise
– 1/4 cup ketchup
– 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
– 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
– 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
– Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

1. Prepare the onion: Cut the onion into a blooming flower shape. To do this, cut off the top of the onion, then slice the onion into petals, being careful not to cut all the way through the onion.
2. Separate the petals: Gently separate the onion petals to create a blooming effect.
3. Dredge the onion: In a shallow dish, mix together flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Pour buttermilk into a separate shallow dish. Dip the onion into the buttermilk, then coat in the flour mixture, shaking off excess.
4. Fry the onion: Heat about 1/2-inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the onion until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.
5. Drain excess oil: Remove the onion from the oil and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
6. Serve with Blooming Onion Sauce: Serve the fried onion with Blooming Onion Sauce for dipping.

Blooming Onion Sauce Instructions:

1. Mix all sauce ingredients in a bowl until well combined.
2. Refrigerate the sauce for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
3. Serve the sauce chilled.

Tips and Variations:

– Use a thermometer to ensure the oil reaches 350°F for crispy frying.
– For extra crispy coating, chill the coated onion in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before frying.
– Substitute the buttermilk with regular milk or yogurt if needed.
– Add some diced jalapeños or hot sauce to the sauce for an extra kick.
– Use different seasonings in the flour mixture, such as dried herbs or grated cheese, to change up the flavor.
