Ingredients
– 2 cups all-purpose flour
– 1/2 cup granulated sugar
– 1/2 cup whole milk
– 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
– 1/4 teaspoon salt
– 2 large eggs
– 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
– Glaze (see below)
Glaze
– 1 cup powdered sugar
– 2-3 tablespoons whole milk
– 1/4 teaspoon salt
– 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
1. Proof yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm milk (about 105°F to 115°F) and yeast. Stir to dissolve yeast, then let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
2. Combine dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, and salt.
3. Add eggs and melted butter: Add eggs, melted butter, and yeast mixture to dry ingredients. Mix until a smooth batter forms.
4. Knead dough: Using a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment or by hand, knead dough for 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
5. Let dough rise: Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
6. Punch down dough: Once risen, punch down dough to release air.
7. Cut out donuts: Use a donut cutter or a glass to cut out donuts. You should be able to get about 6-8 donuts.
8. Fry donuts: Heat about 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) of vegetable oil in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Fry donuts for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
9. Drain excess oil: Using a slotted spoon, remove donuts from oil and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
10. Glaze donuts: Dip cooled donuts in glaze (see below).
11. Serve: Serve donuts immediately, or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
Glaze
1. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, salt, and vanilla extract until smooth.
2. Adjust glaze consistency by adding more milk or powdered sugar as needed.
