Ingredients:
For the Steak:
– 1 pound ground beef
– 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
– 1 egg
– 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
– 2 cloves garlic, minced
– 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
– 1 teaspoon dried oregano
– Salt and pepper to taste
For the Gravy:
– 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
– 2 tablespoons butter or oil
– 1 cup beef broth
– 1/2 cup milk or heavy cream
– 1 teaspoon dried thyme
– Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
1. Prepare the steak: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and oregano. Mix well with your hands or a wooden spoon until just combined. Do not overmix.
2. Shape the steak: Divide the mixture into 4-6 portions, depending on desired size. Shape each portion into an oval-shaped patty.
3. Brown the steak: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add butter or oil and swirl to coat. Add the patties and cook until browned on both sides, about 4-5 minutes per side. Remove from heat and set aside.
4. Make the gravy: In the same skillet, add the flour and whisk to combine with the butter or oil. Cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly. Gradually add the beef broth, milk or heavy cream, and thyme. Whisk until smooth and bring to a simmer. Cook until the gravy thickens, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
5. Serve: Serve the Salisbury steak patties with the homemade gravy spooned over the top. Traditionally, Salisbury steak is served with mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or egg noodles.
Tips and Variations:
– Use high-quality ground beef for the best flavor.
– Don’t overmix the meat mixture, as it can become dense and tough.
– For a richer gravy, use more butter or add a little bit of all-purpose flour to thicken.
– Serve with your favorite sides, such as roasted Brussels sprouts or sautéed mushrooms.
– Experiment with different seasonings, such as dried parsley or paprika, to add more flavor to the steak and gravy.
