Ingredients:
For the Steak:
– 1 pound ground beef
– 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
– 1 egg
– 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
– 2 cloves garlic, minced
– 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
– 1 teaspoon dried thyme
– Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Onion Gravy:
– 2 medium onions, sliced
– 2 tablespoons butter
– 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
– 1 cup beef broth
– Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions:
Prepare the Steak:
1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
2. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well with your hands or a wooden spoon until just combined.
3. Divide the mixture into 4 equal parts and shape each into a oval patty.
4. Place the patties on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Cook the Steak:
1. Bake the patties in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until cooked to your desired level of doneness.
2. While the steak is cooking, prepare the onion gravy.
Prepare the Onion Gravy:
1. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
2. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they’re softened and caramelized, about 20-25 minutes.
3. Sprinkle flour over the onions and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly.
4. Gradually pour in beef broth, whisking continuously to avoid lumps.
5. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 2-3 minutes.
6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serve:
1. Serve the cooked Salisbury steak with the onion gravy spooned over the top.
2. Enjoy with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or egg noodles.
Tips and Variations:
– Use a mixture of ground beef and pork for added flavor.
– Add a splash of red wine to the onion gravy for extra depth.
– Serve with a side of sautéed mushrooms or bell peppers.
– Use leftover roast beef or steak instead of ground beef for a different twist.
